Arles, Provence
Travel and street photography
Arles is a city in Provence, Southern France, famous for it's Roman amphitheater and ruins. Vincent Van Gogh moved there in 1888 where he painted his famous Sunflowers.
Is it possible to capture Arles without the Romans and Van Gogh?
That is what I set out to do and what I found was a vibrant city perfect for the travel photographer.
Today the artistic spirit survives with art galleries, photography and street art.
Arles is home to the annual Les Rencontres de la Photographie a celebration of all things photographic. Where better to practice your travel photography and street photography than the street in Arles.
Visiting in early May I was able to walk the streets before the shops and cafes opened capturing the sites before the crowds appeared. Provence has a beautiful spring climate perfect for a day or two of photography.
There is every chance you will stumble upon an art class with students from around the world. Stop have a chat and take some photos. It is all part of the Arles experience.
I spend several months each year in Southern France and can put together bespoke photography tours in the region
